Review by Paul Elliott ★★★
Widely acknowledged as the significant primary work from Hayao Miyazaki, Panda Kopanda (Panda! Go Panda!) sees the co-founder of Studio Ghibli supplying the original concept, screenplay and layouts alongside director and fellow Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata to deliver a delightful and rather satisfying family movie. Consequently, it provides some extraordinary insight for interested parties into the beginnings of the celebrated anime studio.
The storyline itself has the underlying themes of what would develop into some of Miyazaki’s trademark touches such as family and a central protagonist looking for affection, and there's much here that reminded me of My Neighbour Totoro specifically. The animation is delightfully joyous, and it's box office success facilitated a sequel by the same producers, Panda Kopanda and the Rainy-Day Circus.

Japanuary Challenge 2023 🇯🇵
Directed by Isao TakahataFor fans of animation, and particularly Japanese Animation, Panda! go Panda! was among the first of Isao Takahata's animated projects in collaboration with Hayao Miyazaki.
Aimed at younger audiences, the project has a lot of what would eventually become the Ghibli brand, mainly the charm and imagination of a world through a child's eyes. The emotional sensibilities aren't completely developed here; even though our central character, Mimiko, is an orphan, the film is light and fluffy with a low stakes adventure of silly proportions. It's cute as hell. -

The Anime Marches On! 2020 Challenge (13/32)
One Non-Hayao Miyazaki Studio Ghibli film
--
A little girl's sole guardian--her grandma--goes off on a little trip and leaves the six-year-old home alone for a couple days...cuz that's something adults do. While she's alone she becomes subject to a bizarre home invasion where a father panda and his adorable baby drop by and become her new family. Is it weird that I'm more put off by the abnormality of the grandmother leaving this little kid to fend for herself than I am by the anthropomorphic bears that just show up at their place and start breaking shit? But nevermind. This proto-Studio Ghibli entry from director Isao Takahata is pure fluff with sound…

Review by Christopher Fujino ★★
This was supposedly made because Miyazaki & Takahata couldn't secure the rights to Pippi Longstocking, and it's an obvious precursor to My Neighbor Totoro (right down to the title song). But the children's story I was reminded of while watching Panda! Go Panda! was The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, with it's serial/anthology of shorts format, and premise of idyllic childhood autonomy in a non-threatening world. But the strength of Winnie the Pooh is how funny the characterizations of the animals are (Eeyore is depressed, Rabbit is a neurotic compulsive, Owl a know-it-all who knows nothing, et al), and characterization is sorely lacking here, especially from the supporting characters.
Postscript: the Japanese title is "Panda Ko-Panda", where "ko" means "child".…

Suuuuuper cute 🤍 As a Ghibli fan, it was really cool to see this in theaters and it was so interesting seeing the similarities with Totoro and even Ponyo. I now will be singing ~panda papanda kopanda~for the rest of the night, thank you.
